Integral bridges are a class of with integral or semi-integral abutments, designed without expansion joints in the bridge deck superstructure. The significance an design is that it avoids durability and recurring maintenance issues joints, maybe bearings, which prevalent traditional bridges. less costly to construct. They require therefore cause traffic disruptions incur socio-economic costs. As consequence, becoming first choice for short-to-medium length many countries, including UK, USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand other Asian countries. However, designs not challenges: concern concrete creep, shrinkage, temperature effects, skew, structural constraints, as well soil–structure interactions amplified increased cyclic between structure soil will lead adverse ratcheting settlement bump at approach. If movements from superstructures were also transferred pile-supported substructures, there risk pile–soil may pile fatigue failure.
